Sønderhoning

Peter Urhbrand Fiddle with his daughter Kirstine accompanying on piano. Peter is one of the tradition bearers of the sønderhoning. He lives on Fanø and his style is what I would call the tradition of today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1qlZstNe_4&ab_channel=TommyGerdes

Here he is again playing a traditional night in Sønderho village hall. You really get the vibe of the long nights they have there on the small island. What I didn’t mention is that in addition to the many sønderhonings that are played, they also play a faster dance (same dance step) called a Fannik and finally a really fast dance (again same dance step) called a Rask. You can hear them play a Fannik from about 1 minute in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K0ViSnennyw&ab_channel=sichlaubruun

Here is Tove De Fries, another local tradition bearer on the island of Fanø, who is playing a sønderhoning with some excellent Finnish musicians (including Esko Järvellä). I really feel they are nailing the swing here. Funnily enough, Tove has a love for Cape Breton music and has over the years gained many contacts with many musicians from there, so you can often listen to some superb Cape Breton music on the tiny musical island of Fanø. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvQsNvQcVdQ&ab_channel=Tallari

Kristian Bugge is an expert when it comes to playing for Danish folk dance, and his sønderhoning playing is also where his playing shines. Here he plays all three of the brudestykker in a set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2nk981kHKo&ab_channel=TommyGerdes

Finally, here’s a nice video of some younger musicians and dancers at the forefront of Danish folk music and dance, who are demonstrating the dance step of the sønderhoning. The instruction is in Danish but you can really see what’s going on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6G0V3or0Mr4&ab_channel=RETHINKFOLKMUSIC

Session

The session elements of each day will include tunes from our Live Teaching repertoire. All of the materials for our Live Tunes and Live Tunes Sets are available on the Live Teaching Resources page.

Latest NEFS Live Tunes updates: December 2024 – including Blocks 5 and 6 Live Tunes. If you have a previous printout, you will only need the new final sheet. Nothing new in the Live Tune Sets.

Some Live Tune Harmonies – just for fun, if you want to try them!
