The session element of the day will include tunes from the Live Teaching repertoire. The basic notation of the tunes is available in this document, plus the two new tunes from recent blocks:

Five Tunes/Sets We Will Play!
For those who are newer to our repertoire there are a lot of tunes! Here are five tunes/sets we will definitely play over the weekend, so if you want to look at just a few in advance, these would be a good place to start:

  • Lucy Farr’s Barndance
  • Theme Vannetais (Twiglet) / Polka de l’Aveyron
  • Lad with the Trousers On / Foxhunter’s Jig
  • The Dark Island (Iain McLachlan)
  • L’air mignonne (Simon Riopel)

If you have an old version of the Live Tunes document, please delete it and use this version as the page numbers at the end have changed. If you have a printed copy, you can just reprint pages 12 – 14 (11 – 14 if double sided). It includes the tunes taught in the Live Teaching Zoom calls, plus those session tunes taught when we ran Thursday evening workshops.

If you would like to access the full resources for any of the Live Tunes, and even the video recordings of the Live Zoom Calls in which they were taught, you can access the Live Teaching page for this block:

2023 NEFS Summer Workshop Weekend – Sunday: Fiddle Ensemble Day

This full-day workshop on Sunday 9th July (9.30 am to 4.00 pm) will focus on different elements of playing in fiddle ensembles, led by Stewart Hardy and Grace Smith. We will explore lots of different aspects of ensemble playing, with tunes, harmonies, chords and arrangement techniques, and a final session to round off the weekend.

Part of the NEFS Summer Workshop Weekend

  • Saturday 8th July – Full day of Fiddle Tune & Technique Workshops (Wylam Methodist Church)
  • Satuday evening informal concert & session, featuring Stewart Hardy & Frank McLaughlin (Riding Mill Parish Hall)
  • Sunday 9th July – Fiddle Ensemble Day (Riding Mill Parish Hall)

If you would like to attend the short concert from Stewart and Frank, followed by an music session, we will be at Riding Mill Parish Hall at 7.30 pm on Sat 8th July. Just turn up, all instruments are welcome! Free entry, though donations are encouraged on the door.

Tea and coffee will be provided during the morning and afternoon breaks.

Car Parking – please park carefully and respectfully around the village, avoiding blocking any access. Here is a map provided by the venue – although I don’t think the ‘car park’ spaces next to the Parish Hall are there any more. The most parking space is around by St James’ Church – you will need to allow about 5 mins to walk back to the Parish Hall.

Riding Mill Train Station is just a few minutes walk from the Parish Hall (08:45 – 09:16 from Newcastle Central Station; or 09:40 – 09:48 from Hexham – you’d be with us for the start of the first workshop)

10 Tyne Valley from Eldon Square (56 mins, depart 08:00 or 07:00)
10 Tyne Valley from Hexham Bus Station (17 mins, depart 09:21 or 08:21)

COVID-Secure Guidelines

We will run the workshop with care and consideration for all. We strongly recommend mask wearing in crowded indoor spaces, and ask that you take a lateral flow test before travelling, and do not attend if you get a positive result or feel unwell. Please continue to wash or sanitise your hands regularly and thoroughly, maintain a safe distance and bring an extra layer of clothing in case ventilation leaves the room slightly chilly.

By attending an in-person event organised by NEFS, you agree to follow any COVID-secure Workshop Guidelines in place, and any further reasonable requests made by the venue, the Tutors or Directors to keep the group safe and all attendees feeling as comfortable as possible.
